That Grisly Animated Movie Ending That Lingers Viewers
Out of every mature animated films I have personally watched, no other has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked finale of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, somber , frequently brutal universe with several minor , desolate hints of hope.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from a drive to push animation further, the director clarified that it was rather an effort to express a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is communicated through a squad of colorful pastel bears , clearly modeled after a popular line of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a society centered on aggression and the defense industry, many of these animals are fixated on exterminating unicorns, because of a holy book that claims them they previously were masters of the forest, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely bought into the propaganda, and would rather try out drugs and mate in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these bright beings show genitals and clear urges.
For one especially vicious, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the battle against the unicorns becomes a road toward dominance — and particularly to authority above his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
This bear is a bully , an apparent antisocial figure , and while fear takes over his unit and takes his teammates individually, he grabs increasingly power personally, through ever more violent, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own terror, as a growing, destructive monster in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “But then it becomes a more serious and sad film. And in the finale, it’s a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the playful features by an iconic animator, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it evolves into closer to a more grim work by that same director, including ever more visual gore , a noticeable connection to the actual tragedy of battle.
In the finale, it is an outright theatrical horror massacre.
The terror that turns the film a perfect Halloween viewing begins a lot earlier than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of extreme cinema who wish to view a movie they have not seen on-screen before, and can endure a story that offers absolutely no punches.
See it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the finale will dig under your skin and take up residence there.
